Recently, I noticed that the motor in the Monte was running drastically worse than it had been, it hasn’t run “good” in quite some time.
So changed my plugs and wires. That didn’t help much. Then I ran a compression test on the engine, the offenders were cyl. 3 and 5.
Yep 0 PSI compression in both 3 and 5. So obviously a big problem. either bent valves, head gasket or holes in the pistons
I bought a new to me set of 882 casting heads off craigslist, not great heads, but better than what i have on it. Also had a good buddy (DeWayneV8) come over and port them. If i have to pop off the heads, might as well do a little upgrade.
at the end of day 1 had the accessories off, all the gaskets, solvents and items needs to rebuild the top end of the motor.
On day 2 we popped the head off of the driver side, knowing there was a problem with 3+5. And there it is, the head gasket it totally chowdered.
here you can see the mating area on the head. Total garbage. probably 7-8 thou off in places.
On the passenger side, things were even worse. there was slight crack in the gasket between 4 and 6 like on the drivers side AND look at piston number 6
note the chunk of piston missing and the exposed ring. strangely enough, this cylinder still had good compression when checked.
I’ve been wailing on this thing for about 12 years now, and it hasn’t run “right” for the past 2. Well with the short block completely knackered, it looks like I’m in the market for a new engine.
But this proves just how durable a small block chevy is.

I need a roller of some sort. I’ve got a 350 built to 425hp sitting in my grandfather’s garage. He had it in a ‘68 Chevelle post car with a Saginaw 4 speed, then swapped it into an ‘83 Z28 with a full reverse manual valvebody TH350 with 4.10 gears and glasspacks. Which caught fire after rats chewed up the wiring. The engine’s more or less fine apart from the intake, carb, and what not.
I’d really love to find a ‘68 post car and put the 350 and 4 speed into it.
This isn’t the one he had, but it’s damn close. It had Cragar GTs on it (the ones that look just like the S/S, but with grey spokes)
This IS the ‘83 Z28. After it burned, he replaced it with the Mustang.

Yeah. Probably a cammed 5.3l. Microsquirt controlled.

882 heads. You took me back 30 years there. I work at Summit racing and am writing a series on ls engines Roughly 40 different engine codes between gen3/4. The technologies (afm/Vvt/flex fuel) in the gen.4 were interspersed amongst the different displacement truck engines. A 5.3 is a good move for the money. Aluminum block is another. Cable throttle vs dbw can be an issue if you want to mix and match. The engines can be backdated if you have afm. Megasquirt and others are an option. If you can get a complete donor with engine, tac module, pedal, and harnesses; that’s good too. The self tuning Fitech is another good option for boneyard guys.

882 heads, the best of the worst!
Yeah, with my 200-4r I’m stuck with a cable throttle body to get the TV cable to work properly. I’d like to find either a 99-04 24x reluctor LM7 or LQ4 so that I can use a microsquirt (that i already have) to control the factory injectors. I’m debating putting a cam in, but obviously I need to do this on the ultra cheap. So I will get the fuel system set up to handle decent power, and get the headers, exhaust, and engine accessories and mounts all set, and toss a factory 5.3l in there and run it. and later build a 6.0/6.2/5.5 (bored out 6.0 with a 4.8l crank) that can drop right in and control with Holley HP EFI and a TKO 600
Also concerning Fitech, I’ve yet to see anything they do that isn’t worth giving Holley a few extra dollars to it right.
